How do probiotics work?

When choosing a probiotic, it’s important to understand how they work in your baby’s gut microbiome. Essentially, probiotics help colonize the digestive system with the “good” bacteria your body needs to aid digestion and maximize nutrient absorption.

By necessity, humans get “colonized” with a variety of microbes during birth. While they reside all over the body, most are in the gut. The microbes’ influence extends far beyond the gut to provide signals to our neurologic, metabolic, and immune systems. They have an important job to do!

Research suggests that a healthy gut microbiome in babies supports the development of a stronger immune system throughout life. It also has been shown to reduce “bad” bacteria that can cause inflammation. These “bad” bacteria been linked to potential health issues such as allergies and other autoimmune diseases and baby ailments like colic and eczema.

Why Is Evivo different?

Only Evivo probiotic contains the single powerful ingredient, B. infantis EVC001. It’s a bacterial strain shown to work with human milk to help establish a healthy gut microbiome and help guide the immune system.

A major portion of the benefits of human milk comes from Human Milk Oligosaccharides (HMOs). These HMOs are essential to gut development but are indigestible without the help of B. Infantis. Among available probiotic strains, only Evivo‘s B. infantis EVC001 is equipped to fully consume all HMOs. In fact, without B. infantis as much as 15% of the nutrients are wasted.

The Clean Label Project awarded Infinant Health’s Evivo two best-in-class certifications for product safety, the first product that promotes health for infants both in hospitals and at home to receive these designations.

What is Evivo?

FDA regulations recognize that different populations, ages, and conditions may require different foods to meet their dietary needs. Evivo (save $$ with this link) is a Food for Special Dietary Use (FSDU) because infants have specific requirements based on a human milk diet.

Evivo probiotic was developed by scientists based on specific and detailed knowledge of human milk, which historically has been the sole source of nutrition for infants and is recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the gold standard for infant nutrition. The addition of Evivo helps infants meet their dietary needs by making additional nutrients available through the breakdown of HMOs.

What are some signs my baby may need Evivo?

If your baby is struggling with poor gut health, the most common signs may include:

  • Diaper rash
  • Colic
  • Eczema
  • Difficulty sleeping

All of these signs are related to inflammation from an overgrowth of “bad” bacteria such as E. Coli, Staphylococcus (Staph), and Streptococcus (Strep).

How do I use Evivo?

Evivo can be stored in the freezer. You mix it with 3-5mL of expressed milk and fed through a bottle or syringe. It can also be made into a paste and applied before latching.

If your baby routinely finishes bottles, you can add the sachet of Evivo to the bottle. You can add formula to the expressed milk and Evivo mix, but you may want to feed only the expressed milk and Evivo first to ensure your baby gets the entire dose.

If you want more help integrating Evivo into your feeding regimen, sign up for a feeding consultation with Lauren, Natalie, or Kate to find the best way to extend the amount of time your baby gets human milk and Evivo.

Why we love Evivo

We are big proponents of finding a feeding plan that is right for your family. The truth is, more than 70% of families in the U.S. combo-feed with formula or use formula exclusively. So how does Evivo play into families who aren’t exclusively feeding human milk?

Evivo probiotic (save $$ with this link) can be used daily with expressed human milk and still gives your baby ALL the benefits from B. Infantis. This means you can extend the amount of time your baby gets human milk, still offer formula, and give Evivo. In other words, you don’t need to exclusively give human milk to reap the benefits of Evivo for your baby. Evivo can be given in fresh or thawed milk.

Evivo also provides short-term benefits parents can see:

  • 72% of parents saw improvement in diaper rash
  • 52% reported a decrease in gassiness and fussiness
  • 63% reported improvement in sleep
