It’s SIDS and SIUDS Awareness Month. Want to kno It’s SIDS and SIUDS Awareness Month. Want to know the truth about pacifiers? ⬇️

As a certified breastfeeding counselor and NICU RN, I get the question all the time:

When should I introduce a pacifier to my baby?
Do I need to introduce a pacifier - and if so, how do it do it?

Pacifiers are a parental choice! When and how long to use them (if at all) is up to YOU! You can introduce a pacifier as early as day one, even with preemie babies.

Pacifiers and non-nutritive sucking helps to soothe baby and even lowers the risk for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) (Source: American Academy of Pediatrics).

Did you know that babies have a natural reflex called the sucking reflex? This sucking reflex is present in babies starting at 32-34 weeks gestation. Sucking, including non-nutritive sucking (aka sucking without feeding), helps calm baby, decrease heart rate, and brings a sense of relaxation. Non-nutritive sucking doesn’t have to just be at the breast. Other non-nutritive sucking includes:
▫️Pacifiers
▫️Baby’s fingers or thumb
▫️A parent’s finger

There is no evidence that pacifiers will cause lower breastfeeding/chest feeding rates.

We’ve listed our favorites in our store. Comment Paci for the link!

Power pumping is a method to increase breastmilk supply by mimicking cluster feeding. ⁣
⁣
HOW TO:⁣
▫️Stay attached to your pump for an hour and follow the method above! ⁣
⁣
▫️Massage your breasts to increase output.⁣
⁣
▫️Press the letdown button on your pump when you see milk slow/stop flowing in the first pumping session. Stay in letdown mode for 2 minutes and go back to regular expression mode. (More let downs = more milk!)⁣
⁣
▫️You may not see milk come out in the smaller 10 minute pumping sessions - this is NORMAL! These sessions stimulate your brain to create more milk.⁣
⁣
▫️Power pump once a day after the first morning feed for 5-7 days to see increased milk output.⁣
⁣
Still having low output? Breastmilk production is LARGELY genetic, but power pumping can help a bit. Make sure to check your flange sizing, too.⁣

⁣🆘 If your baby or child was CHOKING, would y ⁣🆘 If your baby or child was CHOKING, would you know what to do?

Knowing effective CPR and choking skills LITERALLY can save your baby or child’s LIFE. Why? Because effective CPR delivers oxygen 😮‍💨 🫁 to your baby or your child’s brain to keep brain cells alive.

Without oxygen, your baby or child’s brain cells will die - and we cannot recover those brain cells. Performing CPR keeps brain cells alive until medical professionals can step in to perform life saving procedures.

🧠 Brain cells can die without oxygen within seconds to minutes. You don’t have time to wait for 911 and the paramedics! You must perform CPR while you wait for EMS. As a caregiver, it’s your responsibility to know CPR. Anyone who takes care of your children on a regular basis should know CPR!

Options for you:
▫book with Kate, Natalie, or Lauren for an in-home session
today
▫check your local hospital or fire department for CPR classes
▫take Kate’s online course through @tinyhood (link in profile) and use code BUMBLE15 for a refresher or if in-person is not available in your area

Comment SAFE and I’ll send you a direct link to Comment SAFE and I’ll send you a direct link to our entire kit! Medications are the leading cause of accidental poisoning in children. Are yours stored safely?

Unintentional poisoning deaths involving children younger than 5 jumped 153% between 2018 and 2020 (source: CPSC).

We suggest a locked medicine box for all OTC, prescription medications, vitamins, and supplements. Head to LTK or like this post for link to this lock box. Curious kids can find ways to reach even when stored high up!

According to the Up and Away Campaign:
▪️Store medicines in a safe location that is too high for young children to reach or see.
▪️Never leave medicines or vitamins out on a kitchen counter or at a sick child’s bedside, even if you have to give the medicine again in a few hours.
▪️Always relock the safety cap on a medicine bottle. If it has a locking cap that turns, twist it until you hear the “click” or until you can’t twist anymore.
▪️Tell children what medicine is and why you must be the one to give it to them.
▪️Never tell children medicine is candy so they’ll take it, even if your child doesn’t like to take his or her medicine.
▪️Remind babysitters, houseguests, and visitors to keep purses, bags, or coats that have medicines in them up and away and out of sight when they’re in your home.
▪️Get rid of unused medicines, using safe disposal methods. Check the FDA website for safe disposal.

✨Save the Poison Help number (800) 222-1222✨in your phone so you will have it when you need it.

Please also be mindful of:
▪️Do not let children handle laundry detergent packets.
▪️Store laundry detergent packets in their original containers, out of a child’s sight and reach.
▪️Coin-size button batteries, used in all sorts of electronics, are dangerous if swallowed. Do not leave products with accessible button batteries within reach of children and use tape to help secure a battery compartment that does not have a screw closure.

    🍼HARVESTING COLOSTRUM WHILE PREGGO🍼⁣ ⁣ D 🍼HARVESTING COLOSTRUM WHILE PREGGO🍼⁣
⁣
Did you know you can collect colostrum while you are pregnant? ⁣
⁣
Your body will start producing colostrum around 16-20 weeks of pregnancy. This is normal! You’ll also notice breast, nipple, and areola changes during this time. Your body is prepping for after birth. ⁣
⁣
Sometimes colostrum can leak from your breasts during pregnancy, especially in second+ time moms who have previously breastfed. ⁣
⁣
If you notice leaking, *ask your provider* if you can start collecting the colostrum. Usually this is safe around 36 weeks when baby is term. ⁣
⁣
Hand expression is the only safe way to collect colostrum. Hand and electric pumps could induce contractions, so please avoid. ⁣
⁣
Even though this looks like a lot, it’s only 2mL! And I collected it over 2 days. I was 31 weeks with Royal when I did this, but my breasts were actively leaking so a bit of hand expression yielded this for me. ⁣
⁣
Antenatal (during pregnancy) colostrum harvesting is a great idea for those who:⁣
⁣
▪️have had previously low supply ⁣
▪️have gestational diabetes (babies often are born with low blood sugar so colostrum can be given in addition to formula to increase blood sugar) ⁣
▪️have had previous breast surgeries that could/have affected breastmilk supply ⁣
⁣
Head to “colostrum” highlight on my page to learn more, see the syringe I used, and for some articles. ⁣Want the blog post DMed to you? Comment MILK and I’ll send it!
